Thai Massage was a healing technique used long before doctors were available. This beautiful healing art is said to be created by the doctor Shivago Komarpaj (Doctor to the Buddha). It has been passed down generation to generation for centuries now.
Oral history states that information from ayurvedic medicine and Chinese medicine were integrated into the healing arts in Thailand due to the path in the trade routes form India and China. It’s use and development in the Buddhist Temples widespread use in villages created the various forms we title under the umbrella name “Thai Massage.”
There are various styles and forms of the work that hold the underlying Buddhist principals and body knowledge. Most of the people living in Thailand did not have access to medical care. There was no scientific research on internal medicine or anatomy and physiology to understand the body systems. They used the science of what worked. It was not an easy task to travel to “metropolis” areas where temples and hospitals and centers of knowledge were when they were ill.
Herbs, Thai Massage, Prayer and local medicine were used to keep the population healthy. All of the people utilizing it in daily life continued adding their personal knowledge to the work. To those that came before us we offer great gratitude! Centuries of personal wisdom brought us along this healing path. Like branches on the great banyan tree we continue on adding our own root to the greatness of this form.
May it continue as the living healing art that it is Thai Massage.
Khap Khun Ka (Thank You)
